Surface Disinfection: Common Mistakes to Avoid

by | Dec 4, 2020 | Medical & Veterinary Equipment Blog

At Georgian Anesthesia and Medical Corp, we are committed to helping you provide the best possible care for all of your patients, and an important part of doing that is helping you properly disinfect your facility. While disinfection can refer to everything from air purification to hand washing, in this article we will be focusing on surface disinfection. Specifically, we will be covering some common mistakes that people make when disinfecting their surfaces, and how you can avoid them.

  • Using the Wrong Products – One mistake that we have seen in regard to surface disinfection is using the wrong cleaning products. Many widely available cleaning products do not kill the germs that they come into contact with, but merely remove them from the surface. Our team is happy to recommend a list of hospital-grade antimicrobial products that are sure to kill germs living on your surfaces instead of just moving them around.
  • Removing Disinfectant too Soon – Another common mistake when it comes to surface disinfection is not giving your disinfectant enough time to do its job–i.e., wiping the product away too soon. To avoid this, make sure to read the instructions on the label and ensure that the chemicals in the product have sufficient time to activate and kill all the bacteria they come into contact with.
  • Not Washing Hands – A third mistake that we have seen when it comes to surface disinfection is forgetting to wash one’s hands before and after the process. Bacteria and viruses can survive on your skin even if you are using disinfectant on your surfaces, and you naturally don’t want to risk bringing any germs into your newly clean environment. To avoid this mistake, wash your hands before you start cleaning, wear gloves while cleaning, and wash your hands again once you are done cleaning.
