Improve Your Veterinary Anesthesia Equipment’s Performance with These 3 Tips

Maintaining your veterinary anesthesia machine is paramount to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the procedures your clinic performs. In addition to maintaining your veterinary anesthesia equipment, you also want it to perform optimally for increased patient outcomes and comfort. For enhanced performance from your equipment, follow these three guidelines:

1. Keep your vaporizer at room temperature—You should keep your veterinary anesthesia system’s vaporizer between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius at all times. In many cases, vaporizers are made from solid metal, and after they have been stored in a cold area, they require time to return to room temperature. Plan on setting your vaporizers approximately two hours before use.

2. Thoroughly clean the system—Your tubes and breathing bags should be cleaned every day and soaked in a powerful cleaning solution. After soaking, rinse them thoroughly, so all bags are free from residue, and let them hang dry for at least 24 hours.

3. Calibrate often—Any type of veterinary anesthesia equipment functions at its best when calibrated and serviced every year by a certified professional. If, for example, a vaporizer does not get serviced enough, anesthetic agents can potentially infiltrate the operating suite, which can endanger technicians and veterinarians.
