What are the Benefits of Using an Electrosurgical Unit in Your Veterinary Practice?

by | May 25, 2018 | Medical & Veterinary Equipment Blog, Veterinary Blog

Electrosurgical units can be used for a variety of surgeries to prevent blood loss, including large surgeries like lump removal or surgery on eyes and ears. They can also be used during surgeries for smaller animals such as hamsters.

At Georgian Anesthesia and Medical Corp., we carry a variety of electrosurgical units. Your clinic’s volume of surgery and the features needed determine the voltage requirement for your electrosurgical unit. With the highest safety standards adhered to, these hospital-grade multipurpose electrosurgical generators are the most reliable equipment for your modern office and surgi-center.

What is Electrosurgery?

Electrosurgery is an innovative method of using electric currents to cut and coagulate tissues with more accessibility to hard-to-reach areas than what is possible with traditional scalpel surgery. When used properly, electricity can be an incredible tool to save an animal’s life by providing increased precision with a smaller incision.

How Does it Work?

High-frequency energy is generated in the electrosurgical unit and runs electricity through the animal’s tissue. Depending on the frequency generated, the electrosurgical instrument can either coagulate the tissue or cut the tissue with precision. Depending on the waveforms produced, the electrosurgical unit can be used in bipolar electrosurgery for “wet field cautery” in which both the active electrode and return electrode functions are performed at the surgery site, or monopolar electro surgery, which requires the animal to be placed on a grounding plate to provide an electrical circuit.

Benefits of Having an Electrosurgical Unit at Your Veterinary Practice

With the ability to perform more efficient treatment for animals with tumours in hard-to-reach areas, an electrosurgical unit can set your practice apart from less-advanced veterinary surgery centers. Being a pioneer in your industry by adopting the most innovative tools gives you the competitive advantage in your industry.
