Start Off on the Right “Hoof” with Equine Veterinary Services

If you are starting a veterinary practice or you are considering expanding to be an equine practitioner, you will want to get off on the right “hoof” with your equine veterinary services. Assuming you have met the veterinary regulations, the next step is considering the equipment and other purchases you will need so you can effectively and efficiently treat horses.

The first thing you need to consider is whether you will operate as a haul-in practice or if you will make house calls – well, technically barn or field calls. If you do plan to go to where the horses are, you will need a vehicle capable of handling going off-road, as that can often happen when travelling to farms. The type of vehicle you obtain will also depend on the veterinary services you plan to offer on-site. You might do just fine with a well-stocked SUV or van, or you might need a pickup truck. It all depends on the equipment you will be transporting.

Speaking of equipment, you will need basic instruments just as you would for any veterinary services, but you may also want to have basic farrier tools, emasculator for castrating horses, and dental instruments. The more involved equipment, such as diagnostic imaging machines, equipment to treat lameness, and electrosurgical equipment should all be assessed based on the veterinary services you plan to provide.
